5 Reasons to Start Skateboarding

5 Reasons to Start Skateboarding

Think skateboarding and you might think of a sport for lank-haired teenage boys in baggy pants. If that’s the first thought that entered your mind, think again. Anybody can skateboard – man or woman, teenager or career professional. Granted, the older you get the less flexible and daring you might become, but that doesn’t mean you can’t grab a board and get rolling. Here is a list of reasons why you should start riding…

  1. Skateboarding is Great Exercise

This one’s a pretty obvious benefit, really. Getting out and about on your skateboard, doing a bit of trick skating and generally messing around will keep you as fit as a fiddle. You’ll feel years younger – as young as those lanky haired teens at the skatepark. True, there’ll be occasions where you fall and whack your knee or scrape the skin off your elbow, but the health benefits far outweigh a little wear and tear. Your fitness will increase tenfold and your balance and coordination will be vastly improved too.

  1. Skateboarding is a Social Activity

If you’re a teenager, there will be plenty of like-minded kids in your local skatepark, but in all honesty, it really doesn’t matter what age you are. Whether you’re five or fifty-five, skateboarding will make you friends. If you’re really eager to find some buddies in your new social circle, nip into your local skate shop and get a conversation going on the virtues of Wheelbones.

  1. Perseverance

Learning to skateboard will help you to develop a fundamental life skill; perseverance. If at first you don’t succeed, your only option is to try, try and try again. Some moves will require hours of practice, doing the same small sequence of movements until you’ve perfected them. In that dazzling moment when it all comes together, that’s when you’ll see the true value of persevering.

  1. Skateboarding Will Boost Your Confidence

There are few things which can rival the golden glow of achievement. It becomes addictive. Once you’ve mastered one skill, you’ll be hooked. You’ll want to try bigger and better things, knowing that if you just keep at it, success is inevitable. That ego boost will do wonders in your home and professional lives.

  1. It’s Great Fun

And we could all do with some of that in our lives, couldn’t we? Anybody who doubts just how enjoyable some old-fashioned teenage kicks can be obviously hasn’t tried it. Remember, teenagers know how to have fun a lot better than you do and there’s a reason why boarding is a favourite teenage hobby. The sport is exciting, enthralling and, at times, it can leave you with your heart in your mouth.

At the end of the day, after all the bumps and bruises, the knocks and the cuts, skateboarding is just good, healthy fun. The addictive tonic of a little danger with a lot of speed can be the perfect escape from the pressures of adult life. If you like the sound of a sport which offers the wind in your hair, a thrill in your heart and minimal costs, then maybe you need to head online, buy a board and get skating. You deserve a little fun in your life.
